I am always lecturing my friends about how we all need to be better world citizens. My generation seems to suffer from pseudo-activism. Technology and social media have made the world smaller and more aware of the struggles of others, and we want to do our part—we really do, but sometimes we just don’t know where to start!

My dad always used to say that “charity starts at home.” He is an incredible person; in fact, he is my hero. He came to America with $700 in his pocket and two children. So, when I think about doing my part as a world citizen, I always think about the people closest to me: my family, my friends, and my community. While I support other causes and pursue activism around the world, I always make sure I start here at home, and there are three main reasons why I choose to give to United Way of Salt Lake:

  • It’s not about the money. Yes funding and donations are important, but I always feel like United Way of Salt Lake allows me to be a part of my community. Reading to kids, Science Wednesdays with Young Leaders at Guadalupe School, or Day of Caring — they all serve as my lifeline to stay connected to where I live. I am grateful for that.
  • Actions speak louder than words. It has been amazing to work with an organization that can produce impactful results and demonstrate how my small individual efforts can change my community. After all, I never found out what happened to the money I gave the KONY 2012 campaign, but I can always visit Cottonwood High Community School!
  • If not now, then when? I have been incredibly fortunate to live in a country where I am free and can thrive and achieve my dreams, so I want to do my part TODAY. I know that someone, somewhere in my community is experiencing the same challenges as my father and my family did, and I want to do something about it now. United Way of Salt Lake has helped me achieve that!
