It’s that beautiful time of year when we take a moment to pause and reflect on the things for which we are grateful. My list is long and family and friends are right at the top. Many friends are the outstanding people I’ve come to know over the years working for United Way of Salt Lake. Last week, Scott Ulbrich, who I am especially proud to call my friend, was recognized at Utah Philanthropy Day 2010 with the prestigious Norma Matheson Outstanding Volunteer award. An audience of 800 gathered at Little America Hotel on November 18 to celebrate philanthropy, volunteerism and the untold ways families and individuals in our community benefit from the generosity of people like Scott who willingly share their time, talent and treasure with United Way and many other organizations.

The day was a special occasion for me as well. I was privileged to serve as chair for this year’s event. When Scott received the award, and his wife Sue joined him as he accepted, I felt grateful to have known them for so many years. They inspire me. Other honorees included Spencer F. and Cleone P. Eccles, who were recognized with the Philanthropic Leadership award. Together, this couple has made an indelible mark on our community. The serendipity in the day was pointed out by Scott when he noted he had worked along Spencer professionally for years. John and Carol Firmage served as the event’s honorary chairs–also both excellent examples of genuine and caring individuals who are committed to improving our community. It is likely becoming clear that I could go on and on about so many United Way friends. Suffice to say, I am grateful for each of them for reasons as varied as the people. Who is on your list?

Happy Thanksgiving!
