Help is just a phone call away, thanks to the United Way of Utah.

1. United Way 2-1-1 is a statewide service of United Way of Salt Lake. 2- 1-1 is an easy-to-remember information and referral phone number that people can dial to get connected and get answers. 2-1-1 connects people to important health, human, and community service programs including: emergency food pantries, rental assistance, public health clinics, child care resources, support groups, legal aid, and a variety of nonprofit and government agencies. Individuals, families, corporate and religious groups can also dial 2-1-1 to get connected to meaningful volunteer opportunities.

2. The 2-1-1 Phone number is easily accessed by any phone and calls are free and confidential. Trained information specialists assess situation, make appropriate referrals, and monitor the needs of our communities. Interpreters are available in 180 languages. In 2011, more than 115,000 Utahns called United Way 2-1-1 seeking assistance. To get connected, go to 211ut.org or dial 2-1-1.

3. United Way 2-1-1 schedules tax appointments for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program each tax season. The VITA program is part of a coalition of service providers called Earn It, Keep It, Save It, and assists any household with an annual income of $50,000 or less. Certified volunteers prepare the taxes at no charge, helping Utah families access the correct tax incentives such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Last year, the VITA program brought in more than $24 million dollars in tax refunds to Utah, with an estimated $8 million received from EITC.
