Don’t let your car get far below half a tank. If disaster strikes and you need to leave in a hurry, stopping at the gas station might not be possible. Also, keep current on maintenance and repairs. And as an extra precaution, keep a $20 or $50 bill under the mat of your car, just in case.

Beware of an emergency on the road, too. Keep your car stocked with necessities such as jumper basic tools, jumper cables, flares, flashlight, first-aid kit, blankets, a shovel, tissues, drinking water, and nonperishable food.
