The journeys of our lives—whether we have come from around the block or around the world, began with one step.

“Walk a Mile In My Shoes” is a Promise South Salt Lake arts and humanities installation project in which over 100 residents and individuals that live, learn, work, or worship in South Salt Lake will participate.  The Reception and Art Installation stroll will take place Friday, June 15 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, June 16 from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Grand Room (far north building) of the Pioneer Craft House, at 3271 South 500 East, South Salt Lake.  “This is spontaneous community art, where the materials and the ideas all will converge in a humanities-based installation that honors our stories, illustrates where we’ve come from, and celebrates the opportunities represented by the fact that we are all here, together, now,” says Kari Cutler, Walk a Mile Project Organizer, Social Marketing Consultants.

Stories about resident’s lives will be told through pictures, written stories, and their shoes.  “Our shoes say much about where we came from, where we have been, and maybe even where we are headed,” says Domoina Voniarisoa, South Salt Lake Neighborhood Center Coordinator.  “You will learn much about the diversity and unity of our special and unique community through this interactive encounter.  It’s a chance to get to know your neighbors and friends in South Salt Lake in a way you have never experienced before.”

Gallery visitors will have the opportunity to wonder through a path of stories and sets of shoes during the installation project that is displayed in conjunction with World Refugee Day on Saturday, June 16.  “This project is a way to help broaden the appreciation for our diversity in South Salt Lake while honoring the contributions of long time and lifetime residents,” says South Salt Lake Mayor Wood.  “The Promise South Salt Lake’s Arts and Community Council is working to unite our community through art, and the Walk a Mile in my Shoes installation gives voice to stories to be shared across our city.”

Admission is free and all are welcome to take part.
