Community Impact Director
Silvia Colins, a single mom to three sons, doesn’t really understand that Oquirrh Hills Elementary School is also a Community Learning Center (CLC) — all she knows is that there are a lot of people on campus who love her kids.
Oquirrh Hills Elementary School is a new Community Learning Center partnering with Boys & Girls Club of South Valley, Granite School District, and United Way of Salt Lake in conjunction with several other government, private, and nonprofit agencies. That means the school is now used for more than just classes for students. As a Community Learning Center, the school provides services and resources to better serve students and their families.
Last week, the Oquirrh Hills and Kearns Jr. High CLCs partnered with Community Nursing Services to provide two free flu clinics for kids and adults who are without health insurance. About 220 free flu shot were given to families.
Silvia, her mom, her three sons, and four other relatives received shots. She found out about the clinic through a flyer her son’s received at the school’s after-school program.
Silvia, who’s a manager at a fast-food restaurant, said she got off of work early to make sure the whole family got a shot. Silva said that the after school program really helps, not only for things like flu shots, but also because she doesn’t have to worry about her kids being home alone while she’s at work.
“I really trust them,” Silvia said of those working in the after-school programs. “And my kids love it.”
