Have Affordable Care Act Questions? Dial 2-1-1 for Answers – Enrollment Period Ends April 30!

Being a Certified Application Counselor isn’t an easy task. I think the Affordable Care Act Team here at United Way 2-1-1 deserves a round of applause after a tough enrollment period! We’ve have helped so many types of people – from those that are easy going and show us their gratitude with homemade cakes, to those who believe in “Obamacare” conspiracy theories.

All in all though, I can honestly say that I have acquired life skills that have molded me into a more understanding person. Such skills include compassion, patience, and honesty — but the most important skill I have acquired is wisdom. Serving my Utah Health Care Corps hours at United Way 2-1-1 has expanded not only my knowledge base, but has also taught me to be more quick-witted. Giving someone health resources is not an easy task and you want to ensure that you are giving your client’s the best possible resources out there — and, for that to happen, one must be willing to do the extra research.

Prior to my time at United Way 2-1-1, I had no idea of the range of resources available in my area. Working with United Way 2-1-1 has given me the passion to provide individuals with the best possible resources. Growing up, my mother instilled in me the urge to share my knowledge with my fellow Latino community. She wanted me to use my education to give back and never forget where I came from. I feel that being a part of the ACA team here at United Way 2-1-1 has enabled me to do just that.

Everything I learn in regards to healthcare and health coverage, I share with my community. This may sound cheesy, but it’s truly an amazing feeling when the light bulb finally goes on for a caller who gets a better understanding of definitions such as “cost sharing reductions” and “deductibles”.

I want to encourage anyone who has questions to use this special enrollment period, which goes on until April 30, to dial 2-1-1 and get help with enrollment. This special enrollment is for individuals who were unaware of the penalties associated with not obtaining health coverage. They have an opportunity to enroll for coverage through the marketplace to avoid getting fined again the following tax year.
