In July, United Way of Salt Lake hosted its second project for Summer of Service at Woodrow Wilson Elementary. The Summer of Service program focuses on kids ages 5-18, and involves youth in volunteer opportunities throughout the community.
During our second project, volunteers assembled welcome packets for the faculty and staff of Woodrow Wilson Elementary. The younger volunteers colored “Welcome Back” notes that got tied onto each bag, while older volunteers assembled the candy and supplies into bags for each packet.
Woodrow Wilson Elementary is home to over 750 students and more than 50 faculty and staff. Among the student body there are 27 different languages spoken, providing a very diverse population and a variety of needs.
Volunteers had a great time creating welcome back gifts for the individuals who devotedly serve the population of Woodrow Wilson. When asked why they enjoyed serving, one volunteer responded, “Because it makes someone else happy!”
We invite everyone to come join us for our third and final Summer of Service project Thursday, August 8, from 10:00 am – 12:00 p.m. at Kearns Junior High. We will be assembling back to school binders for every student and participating in school beautification to prepare the building for the return of students in late August.
