On Dr. Seuss Day, also known as National Read Across America Day, schools throughout the country celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday by doing fun reading activities with students. This year, United Way of Salt Lake partnered with 19 schools in Salt Lake and Davis counties. Nearly 300 volunteers including 18 companies, a Salt Lake Community College class, and several community members visited these schools to read Dr. Seuss books in classrooms, play literacy games with students, and celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday!

Dr Seuss Day 2016

At Granger Elementary in West Valley, about 40 volunteers from CHG read to students from new Dr. Seuss books. Students also assembled Dr. Seuss hats, which they wore for the rest of the day. Students were even greeted by the Cat in the Hat himself!

At South Kearns Elementary, 30 volunteers from Instructure also read to kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students from Dr. Seuss books. Each student received a brand new Dr. Seuss book from the school. The students were so excited to have visitors read to them!

At James E. Moss Elementary in Salt Lake City, students dressed up as Dr. Seuss characters from the book Wacky Wednesday or their favorite Dr. Seuss book. One kindergarten class wore red shirts, hats with blue hair, and signs with Thing 1 or Thing 2 on them. Many classrooms decorated their doors, and a dozen volunteers from American Express read books to the students. The volunteers also purchased and handed out books to students who won the costume contest raffle.
