Read Across America Day 2026

Read Across America Day was a huge success!
Help us instill a love of reading in elementary students. March 2 is national Read Across America Day (RAAD). Every year, United Way of Salt Lake works with schools, partners, and hundreds of volunteers throughout March to bring books and literacy events to thousands of students across the Salt Lake Valley. Every child deserves the opportunity to explore, discover, and learn through books.
Join us to celebrate a love of books and share the importance of reading with thousands of Utah students.

Why Reading Matters
A recent report by the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute found that only about half of kindergarten through third grade students in Utah are reading on grade level proficiently. Ensuring that students reach these literacy milestones at the appropriate time is crucial for making the transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” Literacy proficiency strengthens education and economic outcomes later in life.
