Immigration bills on the Hill are moving fast. Each of the following bills violates the principles of The Utah Compact, www.utahcompact.com.
Please EMAIL and/or CALL your Senators and tell them to vote NO on:

* SB138 – Repeals the Driving Privilege Card (DPC) for undocumented immigrants.
Why? It’s a major public safety issue.  Utah issues 41,000 DPCs; some 80 percent of them have car insurance.  We need to make sure drivers are insured.

* HB70 – the Arizona immigration law proposal.
Why? It would hurt Utah’s economy and tourism. It would create “burdensome and costly” expenses for law enforcement agencies that enroll.  It would initiate unnecessary lawsuits, which would be a cost to state and local governments.  And it would create a sense of fear among our immigrant and refugee families, who may not feel safe contacting law enforcement if they are a victim or witness of a crime.

* HB191 – Repeals the 2002 law of in-state college tuition for eligible undocumented students who have lived in Utah at least three years in high school.
Why? Undocumented workers and their families pay sales tax when they buy goods and services, property tax through their rent and home ownership and federal and state taxes, which are withheld from their paycheck to financially support the cost of higher education. One of Utah’s greatest economic assets is a well-educated and productive population.
