Summer learning loss, also referred to as the summer slide, is a significant problem for students, especially those living in poverty. With limited access to books and robust summer learning programs, these students often fall behind during the summer and return to school at a lower reading level than they left the year before. When this compounds year after year, these students are often at-risk of never catching up with their peers. Some never make it to graduation day.
How can YOU help these students?
In addition to offering high-quality, academic summer programs, we can get more books into children’s homes, and United Way of Salt Lake is doing just that at Day of Action on June 20! To encourage summer learning and literacy, Day of Action volunteers will be able to donate new or gently used books and put together literacy kits for UWSL’s Neighborhood Centers and Community Schools.

This is a great opportunity for youth ages five and up to engage in service with their families, and the event will include fun activities including storytime and crafts for youth of all ages!

Not able to make the event but still want to participate? Host a book drive! Collect new or gently used children’s books to be sorted at Day of Action. Books will be donated to Granite School District’s Refugee Night in August.
Youth Service Journals: Know a young person who wants to be recognized for service hours? Fill out a Service Journal with hours completed over the last year. Certificates will be awarded at Day of Action. Journals must be turned in by June 5.
