Today, United Way of Salt Lake announced the first recipients of scholarships provided through the Deborah Bayle Scholarship Fund for Youth!
Nine high school students from two area high schools whose students have had the opportunity to participate in supportive programs offered through United Way of Salt Lake’s collective impact partnerships were award these scholarships. These collective impact programs ensure that students have the tools they need to succeed in school and in life.
Six students from Cottonwood High School will receive scholarships, and three from Kearns High School. Many of the students have been part of Latinos in Actions, Leaders in Action, AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination), Destination Graduation, as well as received services such as immunizations, vision screenings and glasses, access to a mobile health clinic, health insurance enrollment, and other social supports.
The Cottonwood High students include: Mohamed Ibrahim, Jenifer Jimenez, Perla Vaca Lopez, Andy Medellin-Amador, Gerardo Hernandez Perez, and Yasmin Shiekh. The Kearns High students are: Celissa Acosta, Bianca Paulino and Todd Quintero.
The scholarships are renewable each year and will grant continuing recipients up to four years of full-time post-secondary studies and books, as long as they continue to meet the criteria for eligibility.
Deborah Bayle was thrilled to be able to honor these students with a scholarship award.
“I am so proud that the Board established this scholarship fund in my name,” said Bayle. “There is no more fitting legacy for my years as CEO. It is critical to ensure that students have the tools and support they need to be able to continue their education and graduate from college. It was an honor for me, along with a very dedicated committee, to interview and evaluate the potential recipients of the scholarships. They are all very deserving. Our future is secure with students like these to lead the way.”
The Deborah Bayle Scholarship Fund for Youth was established by the Board of Directors of United Way of Salt Lake to provide a meaningful and lasting legacy in appreciation of the outstanding leadership and service that Deborah Bayle, who retired as President and CEO of United Way of Salt Lake in August of 2015, provided during her tenure. She was instrumental in developing and implementing a new way of working to improve the circumstances of children and families in the communities where United Way of Salt Lake works, known as Collective Impact. United Way of Salt Lake has made a promise to the community to change the odds so that all children and families, regardless of their circumstances, have the same chance to succeed in school and in life.
