Several students submitted artwork and short narratives about why school is important to them and what they want to be when they grow up. The artwork was entered into a drawing and the winners will each receive a $500 college savings account. As we at United Way of Salt Lake ask the community to pledge to raise your hands for education, we are also pledging to raise our hands by making education a priority in the work that we do.

At Mountain View Elementary School After-School Program, students wrote about what they liked about school. Here is what 4th-grader Joselyn wrote:

“I would like to be a doctor because I want to help other people save there lives and to live longer and and I also want to be helpful for them. And I want to be helpful because I have a job and I get money for my children and I also want to work for them not me because I wan them to have a better life than me because I want them to have everything they want like my mom teached me to do that like she does it to us and I want to do that when I grow up.”

Joselyn, we–your community and schools–are trying to provide you with the best educational opportunities possible. We hope we can call you Dr. Joselyn someday.
